⚠️ Writer is gender fluid and trans, and my character reflects that. A male siren, but in human form he has female genitalia and reproductive organs. Please keep that in mind when plotting. Please respect my muse and myself ⚠️

Poaching. When thinking about poaching it seems very simple. Men killing animals for trophies. A fox for a new coat or scarf, a seal for boots, a bird for feathered hats—and mostly that is the case, but on a deeper level animals aren't the only ones in danger of being poached or even stolen from their homes and sold to the highest bidder.
The rarest and most prized creature one of the poachers or dealers can get ahold of are Sirens. Every part of the Siren sells for an obscene amount, but their agressive nature makes capturing them alive difficult. But when Siren teeth are as expensive as gold, keeping them alive isn't necessary, and most don't want them as pets.
Being hunted for so long has forced the few remaining species of Sirens deeper and deeper into the depths. Foregoing their favorite food—humans, and instead settling for fish. While not ideal, they can live just as long, but humans are what give the Siren their unearthly beauty and strengthen their magic lures.
For generations Siren offspring have been told stories, myths and horror folktales of the humans, to scare them away from the surface. Humans were greedy, deceitful, enticing and interesting, but to entertain them would mean death to even the strongest siren.
But poor Evinemi. He was optimistic. Bright eyes and unbound by generations of prejudice and horror tales to scare children. He was defiant. Always wanting to go to the surface. To see the sun, feel the warm rays wash over his skin and shimmer across the scales of his deep blue and gold laced fins.
Evinemi was vain, yes, from the day he was born he heard about how nice he looked. Showered with praises and compliments of 'ethereal' 'beautiful' 'gorgeous'..even without the aid of a humans vitality to make him stand out, and to give him that unearthly glow. If his kind still devoured humans like they used to, Evinemi would be so ethereal, the humans might think he was some sort of angel sent from the heavens. He might not even have to use his song.
Evinemi was lithe, his body slender, cords of muscle rippling under his skin as he swam through the shimmering and endless blue depths. He enjoyed his life deep beneath the surface, but he was curious. That urge to explore higher up itching under his skin like thousands of tiny bugs. Each day as he aimlessly swam, he would get closer, and closer to the surface, watching the sun glitter across the surface like diamonds, until one day—a splash. Diamonds scattered and rough rope caged him. A net hauled him out of the water, pulled onto a boat by a dozen men, and Evinemi let out such a loud shriek that the ocean rumbled, waves rocking the boat so harshly a man was thrown over the side and sucked into the depths. The shriek of a Siren hits high enough frequencies to shatter glass and eardrums, but poachers know that, and Evinemi is silenced before the oceans anger could capsize the mens boat.
